Somewhat less prominently, research also addressed “intrastate” activity (e.g., ordinary resistance, domestic spying/covert action, strikes, protest, terrorism, human rights violation/state repression, revolution, and genocide). Understanding the causes of contemporary intrastate war is a critical enterprise for a number of reasons.
